Freedom of expression and environmental rights urge for protection in Zulia

The Commission for Human Rights of the State of Zulia (Codhez) presented its September 2021 Summary, regarding the documentation carried out during the period between January and August of this year on freedom of expression and access to information in the region Zulia, as well as the situation of environmental rights, specifically the growing pollution that Zulia experiences in its land and lake areas.

In this summary, Codhez warns that, for journalists and communicators, disclosing facts related to human rights violations represents a constant risk. «Criminalizing the task of seeking, receiving and disseminating information constitutes one of the most obvious human rights violations,» the organization highlights.

Situations such as arbitrary detentions and intimidation by State agents, digital blockades, scheduled or unplanned power outages, the null or scant internet coverage «are arbitrary limitations imposed by actions or omissions on the part of the State.»
